Career Toolbox

A polished résumé, cover letter, reference list, and thank you are vital when seeking internships and full-time positions. To assist you in their creation, we have provided a series of templates to be used as a starting point. You will also find additional resources that you can use to perfect your image.

Resumes

Twenty seconds! That’s the average time an employer spends reading a resume. Make certain that your resume follows the “three Cs:” clear, concise, and corresponding.

CLEAR: Your resume needs to make sense to the reader. It should neatly outline your work, education, skills, abilities, and interests.

CONCISE: Your resume should highlight important aspects about you to increase the interest of the reader. Remember the goal of your resume is land the interview.

CORRESPONDING: Your resume should illustrate relevant skills and accomplishments that link to the job you are seeking. Do not tell a story. Instead, use short, results-oriented phrases that will highlight your skills such as “Developed new recruiting initiative which increased membership by 50 %.”

Do use action verbs to describe your job duties. Here are some suggestions.

There are two main types of resumes – chronological and functional. The chronological resume is the most common and works best for someone who is entering the formal job market for the first time or changing jobs within a career field. The functional resume focuses on skills, abilities, and experiences but not by specific jobs. This style works best for someone with a significant work history or someone that is changing careers.
