On December 6th, 2008, a remarkable ceremony to commemorate the first year of the trade agreement between the U.S. and Peru was organized by The United States – Peru Chamber of Commerce (USPCC) at Montclair State University. Professor Luis San Vicente Portes was invited to the First Annual USPCC Congress of Foreign Trade, along with three International Business students.

One of the most relevant topics discussed in the Congress was the advantages that will result for both countries once the agreement is fully implemented. American companies will receive increased access to the Peruvian market. Representation of the American companies is expected to improve the business environment in Peru once the country implements all the necessary reforms in the legal and trade systems.

Prominent officials from the Peruvian government, including the Vice Minister of Agriculture, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director of Foreign Trade, and Peru’s Ambassador to the United States attended the Congress. All delegates reasserted the importance of the Trade Promotion Agreement – TPA.

Senator Robert Menendez, guest of honor of the Congress, re-emphasized the importance of the agreement and reaffirmed his support to the bilateral agreement. Senator Menendez eulogized the hard work and effort Peru put in the approval of the agreement, and stated that Latin American countries pursuing the approval of similar trade agreements with the United States should follow Peru as a role model.
