Spending her internship in the housekeeping department of a hotel was not part of Helene Mould’s master plan.

But the hospitality major decided to make the most of her experience “punching rooms” to ensure they met specification during the property’s renovation.

“From this experience I learned how the operations side of the hotel worked, and it was very beneficial for my career,” said Mould, now Regional Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Concord Hospitality Enterprises, where she oversees Concord’s Mid-Atlantic Region, which spans from North Carolina to New York City.

During her lecture as part of the 2015-2016 Hospitality Management Executive Speaker Series, Mould advised students to be persistent when seeking an internship, keep an open mind when assigned responsibilities outside their comfort zone and keep learning whether starting out or well established in their career.

“Invest in yourself no matter how busy you are by taking advantage of training, network and learning opportunities,” she said.

Mould joined Concord in 2008 as the Director of Sales & Marketing at the Renaissance Meadowlands, and has held executive positions within the company including Regional Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Corporate Director of Sales, and Area Director of Sales. The hotel management company has 84 hotels – with another 16 under construction – representing 19 different brands.

She concluded her presentation by explaining the value of a brand and offered examples of several leading hotel brand promotional videos.

“When you think of brand equity, the customer is critical part of the brand,” she said. “You need to make sure you know your customer and their needs are met.”
