MBA Initial Advising

After receiving an acceptance letter from the Graduate School - an e-mail will be sent to you from the MBA Office with information to help you register for your courses. It will clarify your eligibility for the MBA courses that you do or do not need, based on an analysis of your eligibility for advanced standing, and provide you with a personalized program worksheet.

If you have any questions after receiving the e-mail, you may also set up an initial advising appointment with the MBA Coordinator, Ms. Jonida Dervishi.

Please call Ms. Marilyn McAllister in the MBA Office, at 973-655-4306, to set up your initial advising session, which can be done in-office or as a phone advising appointment.

CWID (Student ID)

You will have two MSU student IDs. Your primary student ID is your Campus-Wide ID (CWID). This ID is assigned at the time of your application, and it provides access to your academic records and other confidential information, as well as to the online registration system (WESS). It will be on your initial MBA advising worksheet, for your records.

E-mail Accounts (MSU Webmail)

Once you have your Net ID you will have access to an MSU e-mail account ( NetID @ mail.montclair.edu ): Log on/Sign up for your MSU e-mail account as soon as possible.

E-mail is the primary communication method used by the MBA Office, the Graduate School, and other MSU divisions, especially for time-sensitive messages; in addition, the Blackboard courseware that so many MBA professors use is linked to your MSU e-mail.

Many MBA students choose to set mail.montclair.edu to forward to another address. If you do this, please be sure to monitor your spam and bulk mail folders for intercepted MSU mail, and be especially sure to add mba@mail.montclair.edu to your acceptable senders list!

You also should periodically empty the MSU e-mail Inbox, Trash and Junk folders. These will count against your e-mail quota, and once you reach that limit, the system will stop forwarding.

Blackboard Courseware

Blackboard (Bb) is a course management tool used by MSU professors, especially in the School of Business. It provides online access to your course materials (syllabus, course notes, grades, exams, assignments, readings, etc.), and allows easy communication among faculty and students.

Blackboard also offers news and information updates from the MBA Program, the Graduate School, and the Registrar. Once you activate your Net ID, you can access these Blackboard resources.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for student loans, which are the primary funding source for graduate students. To be eligible for any kind of student loan, you must be registered for at least 5 semester hours (SH) during a semester: in the MBA program, all courses are 3 SH, so you must enroll in at least 2 courses.

See the Financial Aid webpage , especially "Graduate Student Information" for further information and application instructions.

Other sources of graduate financial aid include:

•  Graduate Assistantships

•  MSU Graduate Scholarships & Fellowships

•  Other Scholarships and Fellowships (general)

•  Federal Veterans' Benefits program, information on which can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office

•  Educational Opportunity Fund Grant (EOF) Graduate Grants, funded by the State of New Jersey to assist students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (student must contact the MSU/EOF Office at 973-655-4385).

Graduate Assistantships

Opportunities are available for graduate students to work as Graduate Assistants (GAs). Assistantships usually are awarded for a 10-month term from September 1 to June 30. In return for an average of 20 hours per week of research and/or instructional support to a designated faculty member or academic department in the School of Business, the GA receives a remission of tuition and University-wide fees for up to 24 credits per academic year (or 12 SH a semester), as well as a stipend for the full 10 month appointment.

Postponing Admission

If you have been accepted to the MBA Program, but must delay the start of your studies for any reason, you may file the Petition to Postpone Admission, indicating the future term in which you expect to begin your MBA.

We recommend that you also schedule an MBA Advising appointment before registering for classes, even if you previously had an initial advising session: there may be changes to the program that have become effective since you were first admitted, which will now apply to you.

Please call Ms. Marilyn McAllister in the MBA Office, at 973-655-4306, to set up this session, which may be a phone advising appointment.
