  MBA Program of Study Footnotes

Credits at Montclair State University are called " semester hours" (SH).

TOTAL MBA REQUIREMENTS: 33 SH, depending upon advanced standing and choice of concentration(s); see notes below.

Minimum credit requirement for the MBA degree: 33 SH, depending upon the student's eligibility for advanced academic standing . Students with one or no concentration and no advanced standing complete 48 SH to earn the MBA. Those choosing the double concentration option complete 54 SH.

See Category IV below for information on elective courses and concentration choices.

A. MBA BASIC COURSES: Categories I & II 9-24 SH depending upon advanced standing

MBA Program Prerequisite - Calculus: A college-level Calculus course is the only MBA prerequisite. Applicants without this course may be admitted to the MBA on a conditional basis, and may be granted permission to take some MBA courses while fulfilling this pre-requisite. Please note restrictions:

ECON 501 - Calculus Prerequisite : A student entering the MBA Program without having completed a college-level Calculus course must fulfill this prerequisite before enrolling in
ECON 501.

INFO 501 - Calculus Prerequisite : A student entering the MBA Program without having completed a college-level Calculus course must fulfill this prerequisite before enrolling in
INFO 501.

Advanced Academic Standing: students with undergraduate degrees in Business Administration or related majors may be eligible for advanced standing waivers in the Basic MBA courses, reducing the total degree requirements by up to 5 courses (15 SH). Students also may qualify for advanced standing through graduate transfer credits.

Eligibility for advanced standing is determined after acceptance to the MBA program.

Students who enter the MBA program without sufficient prior coursework in the Business disciplines to qualify for advanced standing complete 24 SH of Basic MBA courses. By doing so, they acquire the broad-based decision-making skills and functional expertise required to successfully manage and lead in modern organizations.

In certain circumstances, students may have the opportunity to satisfy Basic MBA requirements by sitting for a challenge exam. The SBUS faculty set the conditions under which a student may sit for a challenge, and the standards for passing the examination: more details may be found in the MBA Student Handbook.

B. MBA ADVANCED COURSES: Categories III-V 24 SH

All advanced MBA courses must be taken at MSU.

Category III. Managing the Business Environment 9 SH

Students may be eligible for advanced standing in these courses, but this does not reduce the number of credits needed to complete the MBA degree.

Upon review by the MBA Director, students who are determined to be eligible for advanced standing in Category III may substitute an equivalent number of elective courses, as follows:

ECON 505 - advanced standing : Students who are determined to be eligible for advanced standing in Aggregate Economics may substitute any course from the MBA electives.

ACCT 502 - advanced standing : Students who are determined to be eligible for a dvanced standing in Managerial Accounting may substitute any course from the MBA electives.

INBS 501 - advanced standing : Students who are determined to be eligible for advanced standing in International Business may substitute any course from the International Business MBA electives (or any elective course cross-listed with INBS).

Category IV. Concentration(s) & Electives 9-18 SH, depending upon concentration choice

All MBA students must complete at least three (3) elective courses, for a minimum of 9 SH. For a general MBA, without a concentration, select any 3 courses from the MBA electives.

Single/Double Concentration(s): students may declare a single or double concentration in the MBA. A concentration is composed of 3 courses (9 SH) from a designated electives list (below). Students choosing the double concentration option take 3 elective courses in each discipline, for a total of 18 SH.

Category V: MBA Capstone Sequence & Prerequisites 6 SH

All MBA students must complete both Capstone courses, and may do so either concurrently or in separate terms.

Capstone Prerequisites: Before enrolling in MGMT 580 or MGMT 513, students must complete all required Basic and Advanced MBA courses (Categories I, II and III).
