Marketing Department at School of Business

Marketing Department

Overview

The Marketing Department currently houses three undergraduate concentrations for Business Administration majors: Marketing (BAMK), Retail Merchandising & Management (BARM) and Leisure Industries & Tourism (BALT). At the graduate level, we offer MBA students the opportunity to develop a concentration in Marketing. The department is also the home of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing. Published by Emerald, this unique niche journal addresses state of the art research in the marketing of pharmaceutical and healthcare products – sectors that are critical to the economy of New Jersey and the nation.

The department is composed of eight (8) full-time teacher-scholars who utilize their research, previous work experience, consulting activities, and professional organization activities to continually imbue their courses with the most current thinking in their disciplines. To bridge the gap between classroom theory and the business world, the faculty works closely with the NJ/NY metropolitan area business community. For example, we strongly encourage our undergraduate students to engage in internships. We believe that the opportunity to relate classroom learning to a discipline-related work experience provides students a better sense of the expectations of future employers and helps them develop the skills and attitudes necessary for success. In addition, our student organizations work with the business community to plan campus events (e.g., the annual "Careers in Advertising Day" co-sponsored with the NJ Ad Club). These activities also help our students to develop leadership, team and organizational skills necessary for successful careers in business. Finally, in many of our classes we utilize field studies and guest speakers to enable students to network with executives working within the discipline.

We not only prepare our students for entry/mid-level managerial positions and entrepreneurial roles, but equip them with the capacity to identify their own goals and to proactively manage their life-long career prospects. Graduates of the Marketing and Retailing programs typically obtain positions in such areas as product management, sales, advertising, marketing research, logistics/channel management, store management, and buying. Furthermore, they are employed by such companies as Pfizer, New York Life, Morgan Stanley, Macy’s, Target, etc. Similarly, our new Commercial Recreation & Tourism graduates have obtained management and marketing positions in such companies as Walt Disney, American Express, Norwegian Caribbean Cruise Lines, NJ Sports and Exposition Authority, and more.
