The Search Committee for the Dean of the School of Business at Montclair State University invites nominations, applications, and expressions of interest for the position of Dean. The new Dean is expected to assume office in the summer of 2009.
Montclair State University is a comprehensive public university offering a rich array of programs to approximately 17,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1908, the University is organized into five academic units: College of Humanities & Social Sciences, College of Education & Human Services, College of Science & Mathematics, College of the Arts, and the School of Business. Characterized by a distinguished faculty of 510 full-time teacher-scholars, Montclair State offers 10 undergraduate degrees in more than 70 major areas of study and 7 degrees at the Master’s and Doctoral level in 36 areas of study. The University is located 14 miles west of New York City on a beautiful 230-acre suburban New Jersey campus.
The School of Business, accredited by AACSB, is comprised of 5 academic departments: Accounting; Law & Taxation; Economics & Finance; International Business; Management & Information Systems; and Marketing. These departments offer 11 specialized concentrations in business disciplines covering numerous business topics, including retailing, hospitality management and international business. At the graduate level, in addition to the MBA, the School offers an MS in Accounting and a joint MBA/MS in Chemistry. Interdisciplinary programs as well as dual degree and non-degree certificate programs are available at the graduate level. The School’s 75 full-time and 45 adjunct faculty deliver top-quality instruction to its approximately 1,700 students. The School benefits from the support of its Advisory Board, composed of outstanding leaders from the business community. The School’s current operating budget is $12.5 million. An exciting development for the future of the School is a planned new $42 million, 85,000 ft2 building, expected to open in 2011. The Princeton Review recently added the School to the Review’s list of best business schools, further confirmation of the quality of its programs.
The Dean, who is appointed by the President and reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, serves as the chief academic officer and administrative officer of the School of Business. The new Dean must be an outstanding, creative leader who has the academic credibility, based on his/her academic credentials and achievements, and the personal skills to inspire the faculty, ensure high standards in the School’s programs, be creative in addressing the needs of a changing, globally oriented business community, and exercise leadership which will increase the competitive prominence of the School in the region. The Dean must be familiar with the policies and procedures of AACSB and be committed to meeting its standards. Because external and private funding will be important to the School’s growth, the Dean must have the ability to relate effectively to leaders in the business community not only to cultivate gifts, but to develop mutually beneficial partnerships as well. The Dean must be able to inspire a strong sense of collaborative community and common academic vision within the School and know how to exercise his/her intellectual leadership in the School, across the University, and within the external community. For the School to function efficiently and effectively, the Dean must also possess superb managerial and fiscal skills, based on significant administrative experience. She/he must also have strong communication skills; experience with instruction utilizing information technology and electronic access to information; and a commitment to maintaining and extending student and faculty diversity.
