The Search for the Next Dean of the Montclair State University School of Business - from the Chair of the Search Committee.

February 18, 2009

TO:           School of Business Faculty, Staff, and Friends

FROM:      Dr. Richard Peterson, Chair, Dean of SBUS Search Committee

SUBJECT:  Search Update

The Search Committee for the Dean of the School of Business continues to actively seek candidates. It is our intent to continue the search through the Spring semester so that we may identify individuals with the potential to meet/exceed the needs we have for academic, professional, and administrative leadership. The Search Committee is in the process of identifying well qualified candidates for interviews with the committee. The committee will interview these candidates and then recommend finalists to Provost Gingerich and President Cole. The finalists are expected to visit the campus to meet with constituent groups of SBUS and the university during the latter part of Spring semester 2009. As soon as the visits for the finalists are scheduled, we will release their names and the detailed arrangements for their visits.

We are pleased with the progress of the search and appreciate the continuing support of the SBUS community.

The Search for the Next Dean of the Montclair State University School of Business - from the Chair of the Search Committee.

October 1, 2008

TO:           School of Business Faculty, Staff, and Friends

FROM:      Dr. Richard Peterson, Chair, Dean of SBUS Search Committee

SUBJECT: Progress Report #2 on the SBUS Dean’s Search

As I indicated in my first report to you last June, I plan, on behalf of the SBUS Search Committee, to provide the SBUS community with periodic reports about the progress of our work.   Thus, following our meeting earlier this month, I want to provide this update on our activities.

I am pleased to report that we remain on schedule for the search that was established late last spring when we began our work.  As a reminder, it is our goal to complete the search by the end of this semester with finalists scheduled to visit the campus in early December.  Although the committee still is in the recruitment phase of our process, we are encouraged by the quality of the developing candidate pool.  At our next scheduled meeting in mid-October, we expect to select several of the most promising candidates to learn more about them through reference checking by telephone.

We spent considerable time at our last meeting trying to refine our thinking about how we will evaluate candidates based on the desired characteristics in the Dean’s Prospectus.  (If you have not seen the Prospectus, it is posted on the SBUS web site.)  We also developed a rating form which will be used in our evaluation of candidates at each stage of the winnowing process.

If you have not already done so, we again urge you to submit to my attention your suggestions for outstanding prospects for this position no later than September 26.  We do not want to overlook anyone who could be a strong candidate to lead the School of Business at this exciting time in our history.

As indicated previously, the members of the SBUS Search Committee are pledged to maintain confidentiality about candidates.  Members of the committee will not provide identifying information about individual candidates nor respond to any inquiries about specific candidates.   We know you will understand our obligation to protect candidates from inappropriate disclosure.

Thanks to all for your cooperation and support of our efforts in this important search.

The Search for the Next Dean of the Montclair State University School of Business - from the Chair of the Search Committee.

June 2, 2008

TO:             School of Business Faculty, Staff, and Friends

FROM:       Dr. Richard Peterson, Chair, Dean of SBUS Search Committee

SUBJECT:  Initial Progress Report of the Dean of SBUS Search Committee

As you know, the Search Committee for the Dean of SBUS was appointed earlier this year by President Susan Cole, Provost Richard Lynde and Vice Provost Joan Ficke to conduct a national search for the position of Dean of the School of Business.  As a reminder, the members of the committee are:

  • Chandana Chakraborty
    Chair, International Business
  • Kimberly Hollister
    Management and Information Systems
  • Agatha Jeffers
    Accounting, Law and Taxation
  • Richard Lord
    Chair, Economics and Finance
  • Avinandan Mukherjee
    Chair, Marketing
  • Richard Peterson, Chair, Search Committee
    Chair, Management and Information Systems
  • Claire Taub
Interim Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences

On behalf of the Search Committee, I am pleased to provide this initial report.  My intention is to make timely reports to the SBUS community as the search progresses.  While we are committed to a transparent process, we also will observe strict confidentiality with respect to candidates to assure that we can attract a strong candidate pool.

The public announcement of the search will occur on June 6 when the ad the committee has developed appears in The Chronicle of Higher Education.  Additional announcements will be posted online this summer with such organizations as the Academy of Management, American Marketing Association, AACSB, Diversity, and the Academy of International Business.

Our active recruitment plan also includes the outreach activities of our two consultants, Dr. Ronald Stead and Dr. Tobie van der Vorm, from Academic Search, Inc.  They will be reaching out to a wide network of their sources in higher education and related organizations to attract candidates that meet our desired qualifications for the deanship.

We have developed a tentative timetable for the search with the goal of concluding the process in December 2008.  Our next step is to complete a position prospectus, which will be used as our principal recruitment tool as well as serving as our  frame of reference in selecting those candidates who appear to be the best qualified for the position of Dean of SBUS.   This document will include a profile of Montclair State University, the attractions of this position, the priorities for the leadership of the new Dean, and the essential characteristics the Dean must posses to be successful within the context of the School of Business.

Our consultants have emphasized the important role that faculty and staff in SBUS (as well as the university as a whole) can play in the recruitment of candidates.  Thus, we urge you to identify individuals who could be helpful sources in the identification of potential candidates or by suggesting individuals whom we should encourage to explore the Dean’s position at SBUS.  It would be most helpful if you could submit your suggestions of potential nominators or prospective candidates to me by August 15.

Thank you in advance for your continuing support of our efforts.  You will be hearing from the committee again following our next meeting on September 5.  In the meantime, if you have any questions related to the work of our committee, please contact me at 973-655-7038 or PetersonR@mail.montclair.edu
