TO: School of Business Faculty, Staff, and Friends
FROM: Dr. Richard Peterson, Chair, Dean of SBUS Search Committee
SUBJECT: Initial Progress Report of the Dean of SBUS Search Committee
As you know, the Search Committee for the Dean of SBUS was appointed earlier this year by President Susan Cole, Provost Richard Lynde and Vice Provost Joan Ficke to conduct a national search for the position of Dean of the School of Business. As a reminder, the members of the committee are:
On behalf of the Search Committee, I am pleased to provide this initial report. My intention is to make timely reports to the SBUS community as the search progresses. While we are committed to a transparent process, we also will observe strict confidentiality with respect to candidates to assure that we can attract a strong candidate pool.
The public announcement of the search will occur on June 6 when the ad the committee has developed appears in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Additional announcements will be posted online this summer with such organizations as the Academy of Management, American Marketing Association, AACSB, Diversity, and the Academy of International Business.
Our active recruitment plan also includes the outreach activities of our two consultants, Dr. Ronald Stead and Dr. Tobie van der Vorm, from Academic Search, Inc. They will be reaching out to a wide network of their sources in higher education and related organizations to attract candidates that meet our desired qualifications for the deanship.
We have developed a tentative timetable for the search with the goal of concluding the process in December 2008. Our next step is to complete a position prospectus, which will be used as our principal recruitment tool as well as serving as our frame of reference in selecting those candidates who appear to be the best qualified for the position of Dean of SBUS. This document will include a profile of Montclair State University, the attractions of this position, the priorities for the leadership of the new Dean, and the essential characteristics the Dean must posses to be successful within the context of the School of Business.
Our consultants have emphasized the important role that faculty and staff in SBUS (as well as the university as a whole) can play in the recruitment of candidates. Thus, we urge you to identify individuals who could be helpful sources in the identification of potential candidates or by suggesting individuals whom we should encourage to explore the Dean’s position at SBUS. It would be most helpful if you could submit your suggestions of potential nominators or prospective candidates to me by August 15.
Thank you in advance for your continuing support of our efforts. You will be hearing from the committee again following our next meeting on September 5. In the meantime, if you have any questions related to the work of our committee, please contact me at 973-655-7038 or PetersonR@mail.montclair.edu
