The Department of Accounting, Law & Taxation (ALT) shares the University's mission to be a comprehensive, teaching-oriented institution that provides excellence in undergraduate as well as graduate studies. The department's objective is to present students concentrating in accounting with a broad based approach in both Financial and Managerial Accounting. All courses have a global and general business emphasis and provide the student with knowledge to compete in the corporate world.
The Department provides over 50 day and evening course sections enrolling some 1500 students per semester at both the undergraduate and graduate level. These courses are delivered by an outstanding faculty, the majority of who have terminal degree qualifications in Accounting or Law. Our faculty members are highly qualified both academically and professionally resulting in educational experiences that reflect the needs of our changing accounting profession and contemporary business environment. In addition to outstanding teaching, our faculty are also engaged in a broad range of research contributing to their disciplines through scholarly activities, presentations to peers, and serve as consultants to a broad area of the business community.
The Department also supports a variety of student activities. The Accounting Society provides students with the chance to meet members of the business community in both a formal and informal atmosphere. Presentations are given at Society meetings throughout the academic year by speakers from outside the University. An Accounting Symposium is held at the end of each academic year which gives students the opportunity to meet potential employers and become informed about current business topics. The VITA program allows students to prepare tax returns for needy and elderly individuals. Students obtain invaluable practical experience through this program. The Accounting Resource Center allows students to be tutored by their peers in a relaxed setting and is located in Partridge Hall. A variety of scholarship awards is offered by the Department of Accounting, Law & Taxation. These are awarded based on academic achievement and financial need. The majority of graduates from our program go on to sit for the CPA examination, as well as enter graduate school. The success rate for passing the CPA exam for Montclair students is competitive with all other colleges and universities in the State of New Jersey.
