Experiential Learning Opportunities

At the Feliciano School of Business, real-world business engagement is a critical component of our students’ learning. Involvement with our students ranges from speaking and teaching appearances to mentoring, internships and co-ops, course-related business challenges that get tackled over several weeks, to strategic consulting assignments that may span a full semester. In each case, faculty members work closely with our business partners while supervising student teams and encounters to ensure that expectations are met and value added for all involved. What can this partnership do for you? It can ensure that our students become acquainted with your business, provide you with managerial or technical assistance, and establish a talent pipeline to meet your future hiring needs. Here are several examples of student-executive partnership initiatives:

1. Speaking Opportunities - Speaking on campus - in a classroom, at a club or program gathering, or an SBUS event - is a great way to experience firsthand the caliber of our students. The Feliciano School of Business regularly hosts alumni and other achievers who share their stories and insights in settings both formal and informal. Their real-life accounts benefit students in multiple ways, aiding comprehension and inspiring performance and aspiration. Faculty and/or staff members are paired with speakers to help schedule and facilitate the engagements.  Recent speaking engagements include:

  • Alumni Speakers: In Principles of Controllership class: Tom Bielen (’89) and Bernard Goldberg(’02); In Elements of Business class: Frank Savino (’78), President, United Fire Protection; Steve Luongo (Finance ’81), Managing Director, Marsch; Chuck Muth (Marketing ’77), SVP, Sales Coca-Cola; Bruce Poignant, (’86), Managing Director, NYSE.
  • MBA Executive Speaker Series: Kevin Cummings, President and Chief Executive Officer, Investors Bank.
  • Class Instruction: MBA, Finance course – James Cirenza, Managing Director, Sales & Trading, DnBMarkets.
  • Presentations: Answering the 10 Big Questions About The “100 Best Corporate Citizens List” for Business Students and Leaders with Jay Whitehead, CEO of Tickets-for-Charity and founder of Corporate Social Responsibility Magazine; Presentation: A Woman’s Role in Corporate America: An Insider’s View by Liz Hogan, a recognized financial services executive.
  • Hospitality Speaker Series: Daniel Dolce, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions & Development and founding partner at La Kota Hotels and Resorts.

2. Course Related Business Challenges - Real-life business issues offer opportunities for students to apply their learning while providing a business “partner” with the benefits of their up-to-date knowledge and tools (analysis, research, technical or social media savvy) as well as their collective insights. Businesses with specific challenges to overcome - and share - are paired with a related course, faculty member and students who can add their problem solving capabilities and unique perspectives to the effort. Over a 4 to 6 week period, student teams collaborate with management to develop ideas and strategies or produce materials that can really make a difference. Examples of recent course-based projects include:

  • National Specialty Burger Chain - Students developed advertisements, slogans and several on-campus marketing strategies to increase brand awareness with the college student audience.
  • Landmark Central New Jersey Diner - Students identified initiatives such as highlighting healthy food, cross promotion with health spas and “power hours” to help the 45-year old diner update its image and offerings.
  • Manhattan Borough Artists’ Cooperative - Students identified several “guerrilla marketing” tactics to meet the goal of the non-profit art association for major impact with minimal investment.
  • Montclair “Tween” Boutique - Students redesigned the website, built an e-commerce platform and developed a digital strategy to drive online sales of merchandise for young and pre-teens.
  • Special Occasion Jewelry/Accessory Retailer - Students took the role of ‘Digital Marketing Consultants’ to help a specialty store transition into digital marketing, developing an e-commerce website and implementing pay-per-click strategies.
  • Children’s Creative Fitness Center Students helped craft social media marketing strategies, then created content for channels such as Twitter and Instagram and identified appropriate metrics for assessing success.

3. Strategic Consulting - For assistance in meeting and resolving strategic challenges, teams of upperclassmen or MBAs may be harnessed to work for a semester in alignment with their curricular area(s) and learning goals. A potential engagement begins in conversations between the business partner and appropriate SBUS faculty/staff members who can assess the scope and nature of a project and help to focus and define anticipated outcomes. The project’s “professor” then works to assemble and guide the student team, which typically visits the worksite and consults with identified managers, employees and (potential) customers. During the latter part of the semester, the team presents its findings to the project’s sponsors and offer recommendations for addressing the problem or challenge. Examples of recent strategic consulting projects include:

  • NJ Private/Commercial Bank - Working with the Bank’s CEO and key executives, the student team developed recommendations for a comprehensive and robust wealth management offering under the “Family Office” umbrella.
  • State Health Care Advocate Association - MBA students and graduate students from the College of Science and Mathematics teamed to examine the best way to commercialize a weight loss algorithm developed by a faculty member. The team conducted extensive market and technology research, formulated and presented a written report with recommendations.
  • Independent Energy Development Company - MBA students were challenged to help find opportunities for co-generation and renewable energy projects, such as combined heating, cooling, and power plant (CHCP) systems, in university settings. The team performed a comprehensive market analysis, presented along with a portfolio of potential sites and users.

4. Internships and Co-ops - Internships allow students to obtain work experience and knowledge of business functions, explore a chosen career path, improve teamwork and communications skills, and increase their marketability and value to employers. All business students are encouraged to seek internship opportunities related to their chosen field of study through our undergraduate Cooperative Education program. Students earn credits and participating organizations acquire skills and manpower for targeted projects or periods with the added benefits of exposure to potential future hires and opportunities to provide feedback on intern preparedness. 5. Networking & Recruitment Activities - School of Business students have access to a number of activities throughout the school year that are organized to give valuable exposure to professionals and firms in a variety of fields. These include networking events and meetups, mock interviews, career fairs, panel discussions and student club and society activities. Participation by businesses and individuals affords exposure to potential future hires and internship candidates, as well as opportunities for networking among professionals and alumni. Examples of recent activities include:

  • “Discover KPMG” Summer Leadership Programs Overview.
  • “Current Trends in Big Data Analytics: What Are The Employers Looking For?” Panel discussion with Steve LoSardo, Senior Principal at IMS Health, Joe Caserta, Founder and CEO of Caserta Concepts, Pranay Agrawal, Co-founder and EVP, Fractal Analytics and Melanie Murphy, Senior Director of Customer & Business Analytics, Bed, Bath & Beyond.
  • Fall 2014 Accounting Career Fair attended by KPMG, WISS & Co., Untracht Early, BASF, Sobel, Friedman, SaxBST, Kreinces, Rollins, & Shanker, Flackman, Goodman, & Potter, NJSCPA, Prudential, Gramkow Carnevale Seifert & Co LLC, Becker Professional Education, Marcum, Quest Diagnostics, IRS, Evolution Research Group, Nisivoccia, Becher, Della Torre, Gitto & Co., Selective Insurance Co. of America.
  • School of Business Networking Reception attended by key employers and recruiters as well as members of SBUS advisory board and over 200 students.
  • PharmFest: The Decade Ahead: a day-long event designed to explore the pharmaceutical, health and medical technology fields and New Jersey’s leading forum on emerging issues and trends in the pharmaceutical life sciences.
  • “Be a Career Fair Standout” presentation, run by NorthWestern Mutual. Students learn what a recruiter looks for.
  • “The Anatomy of a Real Estate Deal” - UCREW NJ Panel of 13 professionals stage a “mock” real estate deal closing.
